PHOTO ESSAY: FQS Activists Reclaim MendiolaBY DABET CASTAÑEDA The ralliers may already be up to their 50s but they conquered historic Mendiola just the same. At around 10 a.m., Jan.26, about 20 members of the First Quarter Storm Movement (FQSM) lined up in the streets of Morayta and marched towards the Don Chino Roces Bridge (formerly Mendiola bridge) to commemorate the 38th year of the First Quarter Storm.
Bearing 21 streamers with the names of organizations that participated in the series of mass actions and street protests during the first quarter of 1970, the stalwarts of the Philippine mass movement reached the foot of Mendiola bridge while chanting their most famous lines: Imperyalismo! Ibagsak! Pyudalismo! Ibagsak! Burukrata Kapitalismo! Ibagsak! They were accompanied by today’s youth who have accepted the challenge of continuing the national democratic struggle until its victory. The ralliers may have aged as shown by their white hair. They may not be able to run as fast as before but they reclaimed Mendiola just the same. For after all, they have made history 38 years ago here in front of Malacañang. Bulatlat
