Anakpawis Party-list criticized the signature drive initiated by Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo, eldest son of Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, at the House of Representatives as ‘reeking of nepotism and crass opportunism.’

Mikey Arroyo’s signature drive calls for the convening of a joint Constituent Assembly (Con-ass) of the House and the Senate for Charter change.

House Speaker Prospero Nograles has confirmed that 163 out of the 238 members of the House has signified interest to amend the Charter. Nograles himself has filed a resolution calling for charter change.

Anakpawis Secretary General Cherry Clemente said,”Nepotism which empowered elite rule through clan and patronage politics is a direct violation of the spirit of the 1987 Constitution. Abusing it to change the Charter all together and extend the seven-year rule of the Arroyo’s in Malacanang and in Congress is crass opportunism.”

The group called for the convening of the parliament of the streets on Friday, November 30. November 30 is also the birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio.

“We should stop this Cha-cha train at every battlefront, from the parliament to the parliament of the streets,” Clemente said.(Bulatlat.com)
