UNESCO last week led the celebration of World Press Freedom with a two-day forum in Manila. Reports said that although the international forum took up continuing concerns related to press freedom issues, many delegates also protested the rise of new cases of violations and other restrictions following U.S. President George Bush’s declaration of “war on terrorism.” In this Reader is a Reuters report on the global media situation and another report from Reporters Sans Frontieres on the recent killing of Beng Hernandez, a young Filipino journalist.
