Half A Million In Prizes To Be
Awarded In JVO Journalism Excellence Awards

An
investigative report on the travails of the mining community on Mt. Diwalwal in
Davao and government plan to transform the controversial gold-rush site into a
mineral reservation area earned for Bulatlat.com a nomination to the prestigious
Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Excellence in Journalism.

The
three-part report was written by Carlos H. Conde and Daisy Gonzales and
published in the Sept. 4-10 and 11-18, 2002 issues of Bulatlat.com. It is one of
the 20 stories published in 2002 that have been chosen finalists in the JVO
Awards, now in their 14th year.
Over
half a million in prizes will be awarded to this year’s winners. in the Jaime
V. Ongpin Awards for Excellence in Journalism.
The first prize in the two categories (investigative and explanatory reports)
will receive P70,000 each; the second P40,000 each; and the third P20,000.
The remaining 14 finalists will receive P10,000 each. The finalists and first
three prize winners in each category will also receive a plaque. The first
prize winner in each category will also receive a travel grant in addition to
the cash awards.
This will be the seventh year that the Canadian Embassy awards the McLuhan
Prize, a travel study tour of Canada, for the first prize winner in the
investigative category. For the first time, the Australian Embassy this year is
giving the Australian Ambassadors Award to the first prize winner in the
explanatory category. The visitors program will enable the winner to gain first
hand experience of Australia.
The Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), together with the Ateneo
de Manila University, serves as the Awards secretariat, and has organized the
Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar as a venue for the announcement and awarding
of the finalists and winners of the top three prizes in each category.
The seminar and announcement of the first three winners in each category will be
held at the SGV Hall, third floor, AIM Conference Center Manila, Benavidez
corner Trasierra Streets, Legaspi Village, Makati City, at 9:30 a.m. on June 26,
2003.
The first awards were given in 1989 to honor the late Jaime V. Ongpin, who was
Secretary of Finance during the Corazon Aquino administration. A press freedom
advocate, Ongpin was involved in the struggle against the Marcos dictatorship.
Zelda Dt. Soriano, who is also a Bulatlat.com contributor, is also nominated for
her special report published by Newsbreak magazine.
