President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her handlers should not only worry about
the extreme popularity of presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. With the
elections just four months away, they should be more worried about the falling
satisfactory rating of Arroyo.
Arroyo's popularity further plunged in fourth quarter 2003 with almost 71
percent of Filipinos unhappy with her performance as the country's highest
official, according to the yearend 2003 IBON nationwide survey.
From 62.06 percent who said that Arroyo's performance as President is not
satisfactory in third quarter 2003, the number further climbed to 70.74 percent
while those who feel that she performed well declined from 14.75 percent to
11.10 percent during the same period.
Aside from the public perception that the economic situation is worsening, other
factors that contributed to the decline in Arroyo's popularity are the
controversies which confronted the Arroyo administration in the fourth quarter.
It includes the alleged deal involving government concessions to beleaguered
Lopez utility firms Maynilad and Meralco at the expense of consumers in exchange
for Sen. Noli de Castro as Arroyo's running mate. De Castro is a former
long-time newsreader at the Lopez-owned media giant ABS-CBN.
IBON conducted the nationwide survey on Dec. 1-14, 2003 involving 1,162
respondents and with a margin of error of plus or minus three percent.
Below is the tabulation of the survey results on the respondents' perception on
Arroyo's performance. Posted by Bulatlat.com
