OF THE WEEK:
QUIAPO SURVIVOR
Along
the busy streets of Quiapo, Manila, this woman sells sampaguita wreaths
while behind her an outlet of American fastfood chain Dunkin’ Donuts proclaims
its presence with its big signboard. The woman vendor is among thousands of
other hawkers, fortune tellers and herbal peddlers – young and old - who for
decades have given Quiapo a life of its own and culture. Circumstances seem to
have blended together to provide a metaphor for the Filipino underground economy
that is struggling for survival amid the dominant forces of corporate
globalization.
