Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark Bats For Sison Defense

Former United States Attorney General Ramsey Clark is the latest among prominent personalities to support the petition for the defense of Prof. Jose Maria Sison. The exiled leader of the Marxist revolutionary movement in the Philippines was placed in the “terrorist” list by the U.S., European Union and a few other countries last year.

Clark served as U.S. Attorney General during the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson. He is the founder of the International Action Center, a prime mover behind International A.N.S.W.E.R., which is at the center of the big mobilizations in the US against the threatened war on Iraq.

Clark is a noted human rights lawyer worldwide.  After his trip to Iraq in February 1991, he initiated the formation of the Commission of Inquiry for an International War Crimes Tribunal and the Coalition to Stop U.S. Intervention in the Middle East.  He traveled 2,000 miles through Iraq at a time when the U.S. was running up to 3,000 bombing sorties a day. In his report, he documented the systematic destruction of the civilian infrastructure caused by the prolonged U.S. bombing later confirmed by a number of other delegations and by the United Nation's own team of investigators.

Clark recently initiated a campaign to impeach President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard B. Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, and Attorney General John David Ashcroft for “violations and subversions of the Constitution of the United States of America in an attempt to carry out with impunity crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes and deprivations of the civil rights of the people of the United States and other nations.”

Other prominent personages who have given their support to the campaign to defend the rights of Prof. Sison are SP chairperson Jan Marijnissen and Groenlinks chairperson Femke Halsema.

Twenty-two members of the European Parliament from nine countries of the European Union have also expressed their support for Professor Sison’s defense.

According to the Committee to Defend Sison, actions around the world have also been launched as part of its campaign.  These actions range from demonstrations, pickets and sleep-ins in front of the US, Dutch and Philippine embassies and consulates and the office of the European Union to writing petitions, signature gathering, letter writing, raising funds for legal defense, cultural presentations, information meetings and forums and lobbying at the European Parliament.
