FLASH NEWS:

Confusion on Dela Cruz's "Release" as Malacaņang Decides against Pullout

Confusion swept through the country today, July 11, when television networks, quoting family members of Angelo dela Cruz and Filipino officials, reported that the hostaged Filipino driver had been released -- news that was denied by the Iraqi insurgents.

Al-Jazeera, the Arab network, reported on Sunday the Iraqi militants' denial that they had released dela Cruz.

The Iraqi rebels gave additional 24 hours starting from 11p.m. Iraqi time on July 11 for the Philippine government to withdraw its forces from Iraq, or dela Cruz dies. The new deadline expires at 4a.m. Philippine time tomorrow, July 12.

Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye announced at 7 p.m. July 10, seven hours before the deadline given by Iraqi rebels for the Philippine government to withdraw its troops from Iraq, that Malacaņang is sticking to its decision not to pullout the 51-member Philippine contingent.

According to Bunye, the troops will be withdrawn only after August 20 as scheduled and not earlier, as demanded by protesters.

With its decision, the Macapagal-Arroyo government has in effect turned its back to Angelo dela Cruz, the Filipino worker being held hostage by the rebels and whom they threatened to behead at 2.a.m. of July 11, 72 hours from Thursday, July 8. Bulatlat.com
