PHOTO OF THE WEEK: WHEN
PEDAL TURNS TO PUSH
A group of siblings who live along Manila’s North Railway have found the need – young as they are – to do work that is not so easy even for many adults. In this scene, the boy took the pedal of a pedicab (a bicycle with a sidecar used for commuting), its sidecar carrying two full jugs of water. But pedaling looked too cumbersome for him, and so his sisters join him pushing the contraption together. For this work, they can fetch more than P1.50 ($0.2679). Small as the pay is, the children keep at it because the money they’d be getting would augment the meager amounts that their parents would bring home in exchange for a day’s hard work several kilometers away.
