PHOTO OF THE WEEK

DEVOTION

People come in droves – and usually barefoot – every Jan. 9 to the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila. The gigantic image of the Black Nazarene, blackened (but not burned) in a fire that hit the Quiapo Church during the Spanish colonial occupation, is paraded around Quiapo during the feast, and according to legend grants whatever is wished by its devotees. Millions of people pledge themselves to participate in the yearly feast in the hope of a better life – some of them even bringing miniatures of the image like this bemoustached man caught by the camera. The crowd this year – a time of crisis – is reportedly the biggest in the tradition’s entire history.
