WITNESS TO HISTORY

If the Basilica of the Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila could speak, it would surely have more than a handful to say about the country’s history and how women have played an important part in it. The church, known all over Manila and the rest of the Philippines for its Friday masses, has been a landmark in this part of the city for hundreds of years and is one of the oldest in the country.

Last March 8 it witnessed another historic occasion—the first political rally of the Gabriela Women’s Party (GWP), timed with the celebration of International Women’s Day. If it could speak it would certainly have something to say about three of the noted women who spoke at the rally held on the equally-historic Plaza Miranda just outside the church: Migrante International secretary-general Maita Santiago (main photo), GWP lead nominee Liza Maza, and Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino vice presidential bet Loren Legarda.
