SALUNGGUHIT

Uncle Sam's Dilemma

By Jasper Almirante/ Bulatlat

The U.S. is in a quandary of late on what measures to take in the face of the political crisis hounding President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Just when the President – under siege on all fronts from left to right over allegations of fraud in the 2004 presidential election – appears to be on the way out, former President Fidel V. Ramos and House Speaker Jose de Venecia come to her rescue with their proposal to prop Macapagal-Arroyo up as “caretaker president” until a new charter is drafted and elections are held. The offer is made just as the U.S. appears wavering on whether to drop her or not.

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
