PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Season of Want

The boy looks back as father, a caneworker, takes him along to Bacolod City, capital of Negros Occidental, a province in central Philippines. They were photographed while on their way to the office of the provincial governor to demand food and farm supplies. It is tiempo muerto (dead season) – the off-milling season, once again, and there is no work in the haciendas and mills. Sugar workers go hungry during tiempo muerto, forcing tj\hem to either move to urban areas, coastal villages, and neighboring islands to look for work or head for the provincial government – as do this caneworker and his son – to protest neglect of their plight and demand immediate relief.
