Coffins in the Air

Even as the parents of the 13-year-old girl at far right are natives of the idyllic mountain resort town of Sagada, Mountain Province, it does not make her any less fascinated with the mystic culture of the Kankanaeys of this mountain town – of which the hanging coffins comprise a distinctive feature. Now well-known the world over as the Sagada Hanging Coffins, this unique practice is among the reasons Sagada is one of the most visited towns in the Cordillera region. However, the practice is fast fading, making the hanging coffins into simply a tourist attraction.
