PHOTO OF THE WEEK

In Freedom’s Name

Children pedal past a streamer during the 108th commemoration of Philippine “independence” in Baguio City (246 kms. north of Manila). The commemoration was also an occasion for militant groups to assail an unacknowledged government plan –Oplan Bantay Laya (Operation Freedom Watch) – that includes reported monitoring, intense surveillance and “annihilation” of militant and leftist opposition groups. The plan is now the center of rage among opposition groups in the country and is blamed for the killings of activists. In the name of “freedom,” those fighting for genuine independence face a government policy subjecting them to a process that leads to their eventual “annihilation.”
