SALUNGGUHIT

By Flon Faurillo / Bulatlat

At the Cliff’s Edge

Is Juan de la Cruz – the symbol of the Filipino Everyman – practically hanging by the cliff’s edge? This appears to be the case as for the country’s ordinary folk, the quest for a decent life becomes more and more of an uphill battle with sky-high prices of basic goods and services bringing them closer and closer to hunger and disease. Meanwhile, the government employs political repression intended to intimidate the people and keep them from protesting this state of affairs – at the extreme resorting to political killings and forced disappearances. What choice is left for him? Nothing else but to up the ante in his quest for a decent life.

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
