High Price
for Survival
The government calls
overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) “Bagong Bayani” (New Heroes), as they
keep the economy afloat with their remittances. But at what cost do they
ensure the country’s survival? Amid joblessness and the high cost of
living in the homeland, they risk life and limb working even in countries
like Lebanon, right now subjected to almost-daily air strikes from Israel,
its streets turned into a war-zone endangering innocent civilians. Many of
the OFWs in Lebanon have hesitated against going back home even amid a war
that could kill them all – citing lack of opportunity in the land of their
birth.
Salungguhit literally means to
underline; figuratively, to
underscore or highlight.
