Paranoia
The widespread
“terrorist” scare which came on the heels of the foiled terror plot
reported by British authorities has reached ridiculous proportions –
amounting to paranoia – in the Philippines. This is most evident in the
new security measures presently being implemented at the Metro Rail System
(MRT) in Metro Manila. Before commuters are allowed to board the trains
their belongings are inspected by the guards more thoroughly than ever
before. They are barred from bringing even such items as perfume, mineral
water and other liquids because terrorists were supposedly using liquid
bombs. Those carrying liquids would be asked to demonstrate that it is
harmless thus causing much delays and embarrassments.
Salungguhit literally means to
underline; figuratively, to
underscore or highlight.
