SALUNGGUHIT

By Flon Faurillo / Bulatlat

Who’s to Blame?

The recent defeat of the petition for People’s Initiative filed by the Sigaw ng Bayan and ULAP before the Supreme Court caused much finger-pointing within the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo administration as to who is to blame for this failure. This led to the resignation of Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz. The Cabinet infighting resulting from the decision of the Supreme Court confirms what everybody already knew and which served as basis for the decision of the High Court, that the so-called People’s Initiative is really a machination directed by Malacanang and not a genuine people’s initiative. The Macapagal-Arroyo administration has only itself to blame and the Filipino people has everything to gain from Malacanang’s defeat in the Supreme Court.

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
