SALUNGGUHIT

By Flon Faurillo / Bulatlat

Representatives of Whom?

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her allies at the House of Representatives, led by Speaker Jose de Venecia, have shown that they will stop at nothing to ram Charter change through – in complete disregard of the legitimate sentiments of various sectors of Philippine society. The pro-Charter change congressmen have been heckled for this right within the halls of Congress and in their own press conferences. They have reacted by demanding “respect” which they say they are entitled to as representatives. But who are they actually representing? The people are speaking and they are singing a tune different from that of the pro-Charter change congressmen. That was why the (dis)honourable congressmen who claim to be representatives were stopped dead on their tracks by the people whom they claim to represent.

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
