PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Lost Childhood

The boy should be either in school taking classes or at home playing around. Instead he has to play patintero with the vehicles along this street in Baguio City, 246 kms. north of Manila, while selling cigarettes and candies to motorists. The peso’s value vis-à-vis the dollar has been on an upsurge in the past few months, reaching its highest since September 2002. The government has been making much of this and claims things are looking up for the economy. But this means little when we see children like this boy – and there are many like him all over the country – risking life and limb to make a living instead of studying in school or playing at home, which is what they should be doing.
