SALUNGGUHIT

By Flon Faurillo / Bulatlat

Desperate and Brazen

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez has recently courted flak for offering P10, 000 each to barangay (village) officials who will be able to get a 12-0 win for Team Unity in his native Iloilo. In so doing, he is taking after a Team Unity senatorial candidate and an administration congressional candidate who both gave away money to voters in some of their recent campaign sorties. Vote-buying is ordinarily something that is done under cover: this is one of those rare instances in history that voters are being bribed in broad daylight. Is the Arroyo administration so desperate for votes as to be this brazen in buying off voters?

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
