The Lumad in Mindanao have been struggling for their land and right to self-determination.
Vast tracts of their ancestral domain have been eyed by big multinational corporations for various “development projects.” Military operations pave way for the entry of these projects, subjecting Lumad to all forms of attacks.
Bulatlat, as early as 2006, has been writing stories of Lumad’s miseries and resistance.

Armed men have killed two Lumads, ransacked a store, started fires, and knocked on houses, in the middle of military operations.
Two people were killed, while two went missing in three separate incidents during heavy military operations in Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur.
After the military arrested agriculturist Dominiciano Muya of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, they presented him as a top-rank communist rebel with a P4.8 million reward for his head.

Soldiers belonging to the 73rd Infantry Battalion forced 10-year old Jimboy Saya to hold a chain of sub-machine gun bullets and carry an M-16 rifle. The soldiers then photographed the child and distributed it to local media with the caption “NPA child warrior going to school in Dlumay.”
