The first United People’s SONA gathered broad and diverse groups of people to share “the true SONA” on Monday, July 23, 2018. From the main converging areas all over the University of the Philippines in Diliman to the march to Commonwealth, the participants demonstrated organized discipline and displayed similar calls in their colorful attire and banners.

Highlighted among visual protest arts is the steampunk-inspired effigy “DuterTRAIN: Pagsagasa sa Mamamaya” made by artist collective UGATLahi. It was referenced from the socio-economic crisis that followed the passage of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law.
For most Filipino families, especially the poor and those in the lower income brackets, the rising costs of these basic needs mean tremendous pressure on household budgets.

The United People’s SONA will call Duterte to account for failing to fulfill his campaign promises: to end labor contractualization, uplift the dire conditions of the poor, and pursue peace negotiations to their logical conclusion by addressing the root causes of the armed conflict.
