The Freedom Bar, located in Anonas corner Aurora Streets in Quezon City, lived up to its name last Oct. 24 when it hosted a peace concert featuring progressive and alternative bands and singers.

Dubbed “A Solidarity Night for Peace and Cultural Understanding Against War and Racism,” the concert fetaured bands such as the Jerks, Bersus, MP Composite and Wuds; progressive singers including Chikoy Pura, Susan Fernandez and Paul Galang; and cultural groups such as Tambisan, Sining Lila, Sining Bugkos, Karatula, Sinag Bayan, Juan Isip and Makiling Ensemble.

Visual artist Alex Umali and theater actress Malou Maniquis hosted the program which was divided into three segments. Each segment dealt with an issue related to the US-led war: the World Trade Center and Pentagon bombing, US attacks on Afghanistan and resulting human rights violations and the escalating worldwide protest against the US aggression.

A statement, signed by “Artists for Peace,” called on artists to get involved and protest against the Arroyo government’s gushing support to the US bombing of Afghanistan. The Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) also launched its anti-US war postcard, priced at P5 each, to raise funds for other protest activities.
