PHOTO OF THE WEEK:

CITY OF PINES NO MORE

Baguio was once known as the “City of Pines and Sunflowers.” Today its name is no longer mentioned in connection with sunflowers but rather with urban blight that goes with “development;” the name “City of Pines” sticks to it only because, as the saying goes, “Old habits die hard.” Seen from above, the city’s pine trees are now a rarity, and much of its fabled fog has given way to thick smog rising above adjoining clusters of buildings, townhouses, houses and roads often made impassable by traffic gridlocks. The smog somehow gives credence to a World Bank report that Baguio is the most polluted city in the Philippines.
