SALUNGGUHIT

By Flon Faurillo / Bulatlat

What Price ‘Friendship’?

The supposed “special relations” between the U.S. and the Philippines are in question amid the ongoing testimony by “Nicole” on her rape in Subic, Zambales last November by U.S. Marines. Her fight is an uphill battle as she faces formidable legal and political challenges arising from the lopsided relations between the two countries. The iniquitous relations between the two countries are further exacerbated by a Philippine government that would not exert even the minimum effort in asserting sovereignty, and oftentimes appears like a mouthpiece for the other side. In many ways then, the plight of “Nicole” mirrors the real score in the oft-bandied RP-U.S. “special relations.”

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
