SALUNGGUHIT

By Flon Faurillo / Bulatlat

Thumbs Up for the Impostors

The country is now witness to the proliferation of fake party-list groups – those with links to Malacañang, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and traditional politicians at both local and national levels. That these “party-list groups” have yet to be disqualified runs counter to the country’s party-list laws and the 1987 Constitution itself – which specifically reserve the party-list system for marginalized and underrepresented sectors. To make matters worse, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her allies have even expressed support to these “party-list groups” – a development that, if unchecked, could give way to the easing-out of genuine party-list groups from the electoral arena.

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
