4 Young Quezon Farmers Nabbed, Charged with Rebellion

BY BULATLAT
Posted 2:27 P.M., June 8, 2006

Four young farmers are now facing charges of rebellion at the Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Gumaca town in Quezon province, Dorris Cuario, secretary-general of the human rights group Karapatan (Alliance for the Advancement of Peoples’ Rights)-Southern Tagalog said in a text message.

Jefferson Paraiso, 15, Kennedy Avillo, 14, Joey Imperial, 14 and Elmer Imperial, 19, were arrested by soldiers belonging to the 76th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army in Barangay Pisipis, same town, while gathering coconuts at around 6 a.m. yesterday.

Cuario said the young farmers were then forced to carry the bodies of soldiers who were either killed or wounded in an alleged encounter with New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas in a neighboring village.

The four young farmers and the bodies of the soldiers were then boarded into a truck, Cuario added. It was not known as of press time where the soldiers’ bodies were brought. Bulatlat
