Laywers Conquer Edsa Shrine

BY AUBREY MAKILAN
Posted 12:25 p.m. March 3, 2006

Members of the legal profession conquered Edsa Shrine on March 3, less than an hour before the president lifted the state of emergency at 11:30 a.m.

The lawyers and law students, led by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), marched from the IBP grounds to Edsa Shrine. Outnumbered by the protesters, the police were not able to prevent them from setting foot on the shrine premises where a 30-minute program was held.

Aside from the controversial Presidential Proclamation No. 1017, former Teofisto Guingona urged that other “repressive” measures like the General Order No. 5 be also rescinded.

Among the groups that gathered at the shrine, under the alliance Concerned Lawyers for Civil Liberties (CLCL), were the Council for the Defense of Civil Liberties (Codal), Libertas, Alternative Law Group (ALG), and law students from different universities. Bulatlat
