Martsa ng Kababaihan (Women’s March)

BY AUBREY SC MAKILAN
Posted 5:55 p.m. March 8, 2006

Under the theme “A woman’s place is in the struggle! Oust Gloria,” around 12,000 women marched along Ayala Avenue towards the Ninoy Aquino Monument in Paseo de Roxas, Makati City where they held a program to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The Martsa ng Kababaihan (Women’s March) gathered different groups belonging to different political organizations and alliances such as Gabriela, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan or New Patriotic Alliance), Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU or May First Movement), Welga Kababaihan, Laban ng Masa, National Coalition of Concerned Volunteers (NCCV), United Middle Class (UMC), and the Partido ng Masa (PM or Party of the Masses). The groups called for the ouster of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is facing charges of election fraud and human rights violations.

Earlier, Gabriela members held a short program at Welcome Rotonda that sits at the boundary of Manila and Quezon City, and a wreath laying ceremony at the Gabriela Silang Monument also in Makati.

Meanwhile, simultaneous protests were held in other provinces such as Nueva Ecija, Bacolod, Iloilo, Davao and Cebu. Bulatlat
