Gawad ERJ is given every year by the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) to tertiary student publications. It was named after CEGP’s founder who was also a staunch anti-Marcos journalist.

CEGP presented the 5th Gawad ERJ awardees during its 63rd National Student Press Convention, held May 25-29 at Teppeng Cove Resort in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

It was the second time for the Philippine Collegian to be named best tabloid, winning the same title in 2000.  Both Heraldo Filipino and Matanglawin also took home the awards in their respective categories for the second consecutive year.

In his acceptance speech, Philippine Collegian managing editor Xavier Gravidez pledged, “ Patuloy kaming magsusulat para sa kapwa estudyante at iba pang aping sektor.” (We will continue to write for our fellow students and for other oppressed sectors)

On the other hand, Kapi Capistrano, Matanglawin editor in chief, stressed “Ang pagsusulat ay aktibismo,” (Writing is activism) when he received the award.

Other finalists in the various categories were: Manila Collegian of UP Manila and UP Vista of UP Tacloban in the tabloid category; White and Blue of Saint Louis University in Baguio, Guidon of Ateneo de Manila University and Weekly Sillimanian of Silliman University in the broadsheet category; and Today’s Carolinian of the University of San Carlos in Cebu and Voice of Talamban, the Engineering college paper of the same university.
