A large bunch of electric meters along E. Rodriguez St., Quezon City serves as grim symbols of  new globalization-driven power rate hikes hanging like swords of Damocles over the country's poor. Despite the Arroyo government's promises to bring down power rates, these remain among Asia's highest, sending foreign power firms, such as Mirant Corporation of U.S., to the top of the the list of the Philippines' most profitable firms.
