of Quiapo
One
of the oldest districts of Manila, Quiapo was once one of the city’s
commercial and trading capitals, along with Escolta St. in the nearby Sta. Cruz
district. But today, Quiapo is usually mentioned in connection with its spilling
population, congested traffic and underworld characters. But
Quiapo is not as simple as that. Quiapo is actually a paradox: while it indeed
shows the worst in the country — the stagnant economy, as exemplified by the
proliferation of fake clothes and electronic gadgets, and the fanatical reliance
of some Filipinos on fate and divine intervention, as shown in the abundance of
fortune tellers’ stalls and religious icons of all types and sizes being
peddled — it also shows the Filipinos’ best, as personified by its
enterprising vendors who struggle by both brain and brawn to survive whatever
the odds. The
spirit of Quiapo is captured in these photos from Arkibong Bayan, taken last
Jan. 11.
