OF THE MONKEY IN BONTOC The Philippines is fast losing its wildlife due to environmental destruction thus making this archipelago of 7,100 islands one of the world’s two ecological hotspots. Not the least affected is the chilly upland town of Bontoc, Mt. Province, some 13 hours by bus from Manila, where in this photo tribal youths tie a string around a monkey’s neck and make fun down a narrow path of rocks. Environmental consciousness has somehow caught up with the local people, something that would make ecologists and animal rights activists happy in this Year of the Monkey.
