PHOTO OF THE WEEK

STARTING EARLY

These sons of workers from Hacienda Luisita, a 6,000-hectare sugar plantation owned by the Cojuangco family, are starting early. That is, this early they are capable of rage against injustice, as shown on their faces. They are among some 30 children of Luisita workers who picketed the Quezon City house of former President Corazon Cojuangco-Aquino Oct. 19 to protest against the retrenchment of 326 employees and demand their reinstatement – demands written on the yellow ribbons – favorite symbols of the ex-president – on their heads as well as the placards they carry. The former president did not show her face, however. Clearly, the children knew what they were in the picket for, proving the following lines from Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko: “The young know what you mean. The young are people.”
