PHOTO OF THE WEEK

SUNSET IN HIDING

“Shooting” the sunset was the dream of photojournalist Gene Boyd Lumawag, 26, of MindaNews – felled by an assailant’s bullet Nov. 12 in Jolo, Sulu in southern Philippines after taking pictures of the island’s sunset. Condemning the murder for its utter senselessness, his colleagues in Manila staged a protest action Nov. 17 against the latest spate of media killings, with Manila Bay’s legendary sunset as the backdrop in recognition of the slain young journalist’s dream photo shoot. Well, the sun wasn’t as cooperative as they would have wanted it to be that day, as a typhoon was brewing then, but the journalists who carried torches and placards didn’t mind it one bit: they were after all rallying first and foremost to keep more of their colleagues from being dragged into the night, as Gene Boyd was after photographing the last rays of daylight.
