PHOTO OF THE WEEK

AT REST

No, this sacada (seasonal farmworker) of the Cojuangco-owned Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac (120 kms. north of Manila) didn’t die in the midst of the day’s work. He is just asleep, sprawled on a piece of cardboard that is not enough to shield him from dirt and the soil’s heat. Just like his lowly wage – barely able to feed him and his family, forcing them to live in the squalid quarters provided by the rich hacienda owners. But they are not the only ones: there are multitudes of sacadas as unfortunate as they in other parts of the country.
