PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Cheers

In a  simulation of beach sports, the two boys, to the cheers of their village mates, race to hurdle tires in an obstacle course game – a favorite among boys in the provinces – along the banks of the Abra River in rustic Barangay (village) Calaba, Bangued, Abra. The game in this northern Philippine barrio is part of the recent celebration of the village feast. All are seemingly breathless – the boys from running, the audience in anticipation. Each is bent on beating the other guy, pouring all energy into every step as village folks look on in excitement. In the provinces, winning in games like these makes the boys feel as though they’re getting trophies in the major athletic jousts.
