PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Firewood in Tobacco Country

The Ilocos region – tobacco country - in northern Philippines is known for its sturdy and hard-working people. And not without reason: In the photo, for a few pesos boys unload a jeepful of firewood in Vigan, capital city of Ilocos Sur 407 kms north of Manila for use by consumers especially cottage industries like makers of longaniza (native sausage), bibingka (rice cake) and the like. As prices of liquefied petroleum keep on shooting up, firewood comes in handy – never mind if it can also contrbute to forest degradation and environmental disaster.
