OF THE WEEK

Uneasy Peace
With simple belongings
wrapped and placed atop their heads and in their backpacks, women and
children refugees of war-torn Andap Valley, Surigao del Sur in southern
Philippines return to their villages after spending three weeks in
evacuation centers. War refugees in several towns found their villages
looted and property destroyed – they said – by government troops
supposedly hot on the heels of guerrillas. For now peace has returned to
their villages where they used to enjoy normal lives until 11 truckloads
of soldiers came.
