PHOTO OF THE WEEK

A Different Cañao

The two girls were photographed while performong the sagni (an Igorot dance), as behind them a number of young men prepare a newly-butchered pig for a ritual. These are part of the cañao, a traditional Igorot feast. It is usually the elders who spearhead the cañao rituals. But during the Aug. 11 opening of the National Minority Week commemoration in Baguio City, 246 kms. north of Manila, it was young men and women who spearheaded the rituals. This year, youth are given a major role in the National Minority Week celebrations as it is they who will inherit whatever would be the fate of the land and its resources.
