PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Deceptive Calm

The man is a silhouette of calm as he disembarks from his boat on the shores of Villareal, western Samar (a province in Eastern Visayas). Behind him is a sunrise painting the sky a serene pink. Looking at this scene alone, one cannot tell that Villareal is now a town living in fear, with 27 local officials (from the mayor down) on the military’s hit list - one of whom was recently gunned down - and residents including village captains fleeing for fear that they might be the next to end up dead.
