PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Business Behind Bars

It is a store all right, but not the usual sari-sari (variety) store we find at street corners in the Philippines. This one is operated by inmates of the Baguio City Jail, offering buko (young coconut) juice for P10 ($0.19, at P53.45 to US$1) a cup. It is an effort to augment the limited food subsidy given to the inmates. One wonders, however, if this person earns at all from his business, considering that his 600 inmates at Baguio City Jail are as cash-strapped as he is, if not even more.
