OF THE WEEK

Still in the Dumps
A group of children
gather rubbish from a pile at the Payatas dumpsite in Quezon City. After
Smokey Mountain in Tondo, Manila was “rehabilitated” during the term of
former President Fidel V. Ramos, Payatas became known as the next main
symbol of urban poverty in Metro Manila. A landslide resulting from hard
rains claimed hundreds of lives in Payatas on July 10, 2000. It has been
six years since the Payatas tragedy took place and justice has yet to be
done to the victims – while many of their relatives are still there, still
in the dumps.
