OF THE WEEK

Long Way from Home
The Badjaos were once a
proud people who impressed the world with their diving skills. With
nothing but daggers between their lips; with their bare eyes, without any
diving equipment, they could scour the farthest, darkest depths of the
seas and come back with the most beautiful pearls. But that seems a thing
of the past for the Badjaos, who can now be seen scattered throughout the
archipelago, many of them thousands of kilometers away from their native
Mindanao, begging for alms. Some of them have even reached as far as
Baguio City (246 kms. north of Manila), pleading for mercy and a few coins
from passersby. They are now a far cry from the proud tribe that they used
to be.
