SALUNGGUHIT

By Flon Faurillo / Bulatlat

Derailed

After losing in the Supreme Court their bid to have the Constitution revised through a so-called “people’s initiative,” President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her political allies still insist on running what they call the Chacha (Charter Change) Train – with the objective of concentrating power in the Arroyo administration, opening up the economy further to foreign plunder, and extending the terms of local officials. But, as one of the opponents of the charter change drive said, “Time is not on their side,” with the 2007 congressional elections approaching. More importantly, the people continue to defy moves by the powers-that-be to tamper with the fundamental law of the land based on self-serving interests. At this point Arroyo’s Chacha Train is as good as derailed.

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
