Raking In for Fun

Notice the pile of fun cards (known in the Philippines as “teks”) held by the boy in orange shirt. No, he didn’t amass all of them over a period of several years. He won all – yes, all of them – in just one hour, during a game in which he got extremely lucky. The cards on his shirt are not all that he won: see his playmates handing him piles more. If it were a game that involved big stakes, the boy and his family would have been out of the Parola compound in an instant – and far from the poverty that afflicts the said community in Tondo, Manila.
