PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Starting Them Young

Gambling appears to be part of life for many people in the Philippines, a country where life has for the most part been harsh enough to make not a few turn to luck and chance for hope. In some areas people are “initiated” into various games of chance early on in life. Just like these children photographed during a feast in San Juan, Ilocos Sur, playing beto-beto (a dice-roll betting game) with an elderly townswoman. This early in their lives, they have been led into the workings of a culture that looks to chance for hope of a sudden change in fortune.
