PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Health ‘Alternatives’

It’s not only in Quiapo, Manila that we can find the likes of her. The old woman is one of several vendors of unusual herbs and concoctions supposed to have curative properties in Baguio City, 246 kms. north of Manila. Most well-known among these are supposed cures for unwanted pregnancies. She and others like her have been called “quack doctors,” but government is rather tolerant toward them and common people continue to buy their products. Their increasing presence in the country’s major population centers proves that medical costs in the country are becoming more and more unaffordable.
